‘I made a series of images while walking down a wooden jetty on a cloudy day.

Later, I layered multiple frames to emphasise the texture of the wood. The white areas are whitewashed poles that added slashes of brightness to the scene.

At the time, I was feeling depressed and cowed but determined to find a way through.

Despite this being a dark image, it originated from hope. I had pre-visualised a picture where there was nothing obvious for inspiration. Then, the techniques I used helped renew my belief in my photographic vision and technical ability.’
