This is a long exposure of sunrise at The Point, Newcastle Beach, Australia. It features blurred waves against the sharp detail of the rock shelf and the green algae covering parts of it.

If you look at the detail image, you can make out two slightly blurred seagulls on the rockshelf. From my high viewpoint, I didn’t notice them when I took the picture. As I walked down to the beach to find a different angle, a surfer crossing the rocks asked for help.

He had noticed the two seagulls seemed to be playing tug-of-war. On closer inspection, we saw that small fish hooks caught them on each beak, and about 30 cm of thin fishing line linked them.

With the help of another surfer, the three of us caught the gulls and removed the hook from one of them. Unfortunately, the other bird had swallowed the hook.

One of my fellow rescuers was able to bite the excess line off near the beak, and both birds flew off.
